I had the opportunity to sit down with Rick Wight who owns a number of companies including Building Solutions out of Bend OR. We had a wonderful conversation about his path as a business owner. Rick started his career in construction back in 1985 down in the San Diego area. He and his wife made the decision to uproot his young family and move to Bend Oregon 7 years later and start a business. We talk about how he came to make that decision and what is was like starting a new business, in a new town.
Business was good for many years until…….. The Great Recession hit in late 2007. Fewer industries were hit harder than construction. At its peak, Rick’s business had 53 employees. At the bottom of the recession, he was down to 11 employees and revenues had dropped 70%. We talk about what that was like and what kept him going. It’s my favorite part of our conversation.
