None of Business S4:E8 -Joel Flake

On this show I have Joel Flake who founded and owns Business Advisory Services and he helps other business owners with high level issues in their company’s. Who better to have on a business show!

My favorite part of Joel’s story was how he built his first company Gemtek which is a pest control company. He would go to work at his prestigious law firm here in Boise. During his lunch break he would change into his pest control sales uniform like Superman in the phone booth (I picture him doing this in the elevator of the law building), and go door to door to sell his service. Joel did this for four months and then jumped in headfirst.

You see, Joel was fascinated with subscription services. The idea of selling a service once, and having it pay and pay and pay. He did his homework, an opportunity came knocking and he bet his job at the law firm, that he could make it work.

We talk about building a business like this from the ground up. “The first two years were brutal. Unless you’ve experienced it you have no idea what it’s like.” He worked hard, grew the company and it became a huge success. Joel ended up being courted by a national company and upon their third offer, he couldn’t refuse the number they put in front of him.
