None of my Business S7:E6- Troy Korsgaden

This is a very special episode for me. I had an opportunity to sit down with an industry giant, a 35 year expert in the field of insurance, an award-winning agency owner, consultant, speaker, author, my friend, and mentor Troy Korsgaden.

This episode is actually part one of a two-part interview that I did with Troy. Find the second part in my other podcast, Simply Explaining Insurance. In this first part, we talk about his path to becoming an agency owner. We discuss how he ran a successful agency in his first 7 years. Something was telling Troy it could be better. I got the sense he felt underwhelmed. Troy then tells me the story of how a phone call from his dentist changed his life.

He doubled the size of his agency in 18 months and soon everyone in the industry knew him as just “Troy”. He exited his agency (which his sisters still run to this day) and entered the consulting world.

The core of Troy’s transformation was around building thoughtful systems and then delegating them to professional staff. This includes teaching them tested scripts on how to handle common objections. It also includes saying the right things to the right people at the right time. These are simple, easy to understand, measurable tasks. But not easy. These take time, practice and real conviction to implement properly.

We discuss what it means to thoughtfully onboard technology. How much is too much? Troy believes that human touch is always going to be important.

I ask him what is the simplest thing we can do to move the needle? Again, he gives you an actionable measurable answer. See 4 people every day. This may vary by industry but it’s no secret that activity is going to drive growth. Up your activity, up your growth.
