None of my Business S6:E10- Tanner Lowry

On this episode I have Tanner Lowry who is the General Manager of D1 Training here in Boise Idaho. D1 is brand new in town and they bring a much-needed boost to athletic training.

Tanner has taken an impressive path to get to where he is. His journey starts in a small town in Washington state. From there he went to school at Washington State University (GO COUGS!) where he got involved with athletic training.

It was there he decided to make a career out of it but not the way he anticipated. We hear a lot about the importance of mentors on the show, and Tanner brings you another story how one conversation with someone you respect, can change the course of your life.

From WSU he got into a Masters program at a school with a rich athletic history, Baylor. It was at this juncture in his life that the stars aligned and he got a job at D1 Training.

We talk about the history of D1 and its explosive growth. At his time at the Baylor D1, he was shocked that no one was going to this beautiful state of the art facility. He played an integral role in growing its membership and he started by taking students from Baylor to D1. He soon had a vision of helping the reach a much different potential.

His efforts did not go unnoticed. There was a new GM that came on board and they worked together to grow it into one of the more successful gyms in Waco.

Fast forward a couple of years and Tanner was asked to open the facility in Boise. He and his new wife and their dog, packed up their car, pointed it north and got to work.

We talk about what it was like getting a facility like this open in a short period of time. Tanner tells me what it was like to hire 23 people to be fully staffed. His role from trainer has been greatly reduced due to becoming a GM. He loves everything about D1 and you can hear it in his words and his voice. I did ask him what it was like to reduce his role in training, his first love, to management.

He made the transition seamlessly. Tanner is a man who has a level head, makes smart decisions in a calm and calculated manner and thrives under pressure. He does miss training full time, but has found a way to stay active in the guy in a way that fullfils that need.
